Case Summary
Background

The primary objective of this project is to assist South Africa in planning and supporting their Integrated Resource Plan by identifying policy issues, support system modernization efforts and assist in expanding a workforce of local power system experts.  Project highlights include a Grid integration study to analyze the potential for adding renewables energies under current conditions as well as under future expansion scenarios. Assisting the South African government in capacity building via training, workshops and staff exchanges were also completed.

Outcomes

Some of the key impacts were; (i) Identifying policy approaches to achieve a variable source grid, capacity building, (ii) Understanding the wind and solar energy supply curve in South Africa, and (iii) analysis of the economic impact of renewable energy
