Protected Planet

1pm, October 07th, 2015

Protected Planet is the online interface for the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA), the most comprehensive global database on terrestrial and marine protected areas.

The database is a joint project of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). Protected Planet allows users to discover the protected areas of the world through exploring maps and intuitive searching, accessing information from the WDPA, photos from Panoramio and text descriptions from Wikipedia.

The WDPA delivers invaluable information to decision-makers around the world, particularly in terms of measuring the extent and effectiveness of protected areas as an indicator for meeting global biodiversity targets. The database contains comprehensive information on the different types of protected areas, ranging from those strictly protected for conservation purposes to those where sustainable use of natural resources is allowed; and includes government, co-managed, private and community managed areas.

Access Protected Planet.
