Urban waste management co-benefits evaluation tool guidebook

This guidebook provides a manual for the co-benefits evaluation tool for municipal solid waste, which is developed by the sustainable urban future program in the United Nations University, Institute of Advanced Studies (UNUIAS), to estimate GHG emissions, energy potentials and economic evaluation of different municipal solid waste management technologies.

Different waste management technologies have the potential to reduce the amount of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) disposed in landfills while also providing electricity or electricity and heat that reduces GHG emissions.

The municipal waste co-benefits evaluation tool evaluates the climate co-benefits of the municipal waste management technologies by using a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach. This approach is used in the tool to consider coordination of a number of actions to recover material and energy and to reduce environmental impact through Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS). This tool quantifies the environmental impacts including GHG emissions and air pollutants accompanied by energy implications and cost-benefit analysis of the various waste management technologies including incineration, landfilling, composting, anaerobic digestion and recycling.
