Who we are
The Working Group is guided by a steering committee of about 15 representatives of organizations, including USAID, RECOFTC, US Forest Service, Global Environment Center (Malaysia), CIFOR, FAO, SilvaCarbon, Winrock International, coordinating with the LEDS GP regional platforms. The Working Group co-chairs are Natcha Tulyasuwan (Engility Corp), Ken Andrasko (Winrock International) and Adelaine Tan (Global Environment Centre). See the AFOLU Working Group factsheet. Contact us.
Workshops The Working Group has co-organized about eight workshops over the past two years on: Carbon accounting in mangrove ecosystems, forests, and croplands; mitigation and LEDS planning in the land use sector; rice production and accounting; and options to finance land use projects, including engaging the private sector. We expect to co-organize three to four workshops in 2017. Case studies Currently the AFOLU Working Group are working on integrated green growth planning including the land use sector in Thanh Hoa province, northern Vietnam; and on the interaction and potential synergies between LEDS and REDD+ programs and planning in Peru and Guatemala, with the LEDS GP Regional Platform for Latin America and the Caribbean (LEDS LAC). We can jointly organize other webinars if interest is expressed.
Forestry: carbon accounting; mitigation methods: Several countries and organizations (e.g., SilvaCarbon program in Bangkok, Thailand; Asia LEDS Program; LEDS LAC Regional Platform) highlighted the need for more detailed methods for carbon accounting for mangroves; identification of types of finance available for land use activities. The Working Group co-supported and provided experts to technical workshops in 2016, including:
- Regional workshop on incorporating mangroves into national GHG inventories (March 2016, Siem Reap, Cambodia)
- National workshop on mangrove carbon stocks and implications for conservation and management (March 2016, Phnom Penh, Cambodia)
- Panel on “Private Sector involvement in achieving AFLU NDCs : ESGs and banking sector” (ALP Forum, Hanoi, June 2016)
- Presentation on interactions and contradictions between REDD+ readiness planning and finance, and LEDS land use plans (LEDS LAC annual meeting Sept, Panama City).
