Africa LEDS Partnership

The Africa LEDS Partnership (AfLP) brings together representatives from governments, civil society and the private sector working to advance the design and implementation of actions targeted at realizing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), development of long-term strategies (LTS) and other sustainability goals across the continent. Under the umbrella of the LEDS Global Partnership (LEDS GP) and alongside the other regional platforms in Asia and Latin America & the Caribbean, the AfLP works to address Africa-specific challenges in low emission and climate resilient development priorities through peer-to-peer learning and engagement.With a broad membership from over 20 countries across Africa, the AfLP works towards a prosperous, climate-resilient Africa, with inclusive green growth, for the welfare of current and future generations. It aims to promote low-carbon, climate-resilient development to support poverty alleviation, job creation and environmental management in Africa.

Objectives

Promote information exchange and coordination among LEDS programs and country institutions designing and implementing actions to achieve Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), development of Long-Term Strategies (LTS) and other sustainability goals in Africa

Cultivate and support LEDS and NDC champions across Africa

Enhance the technical and institutional capacities for the design and implementation of LEDS, NDC and LTS development in Africa

Communities of Practice

AMG CoP

The African Mini-Grids Community of Practice (AMG-CoP) is a peer-to-peer working group for African government leaders committed to scaling up mini-grid policies and systems in their countries. Supported by the LEDS GP Energy and Finance Working Groups, the AMG-CoP aims to advance the application of mini-grids as a solution that assists countries in achieving their economic, social development, and energy sector goals, as well as their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Livestock CoP

The Livestock Community of Practice is an interactive network of decision-makers, research institutions and other organizations addressing real-time policy, capacity and technical challenges impacting climate action in the livestock sector. The platform allows for deeper learning and sustained participation, continuous access to tools and expert assistance, and fostering regional AFOLU champions. It is demand driven to meet members’ needs and offer support and solutions to early movers.

SOC CoP

The Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) Community of Practice is an interactive network of decision-makers, research institutions and other organizations addressing real-time policy, capacity and technical challenges affecting the integration of SOC in Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and in the development of Long-tern Strategies (LTS). The platform allows for deeper learning and sustained participation, continuous access to tools and expert assistance, and fostering regional AFOLU champions. It is demand driven to meet members’ needs and offer support and solutions to early movers.

AfLP Steering Committee

The AfLP’s Steering Committee provides the strategic guidance to the Secretariat in achieving the goals of the Partnership. The Steering Committee is composed of various state and non-state actors who are engaged in progressing low emission climate-resilient development on the continent. The Steering Committee is ably headed by Co-Chairs Dr Alain Serge Kouadio of Côte d’Ivoire, and Dr. George Wamukoya of Kenya.

The AfLP Secretariat is based at SouthSouthNorth in Cape Town, South Africa. The Secretariat team comprises Lead Josh Ogada, assisted by technical project coordinator Mr. Samson Mbewe, project manager Ms. Sihle Matiwane, and Knowledge management specialist Ms Chevon Griffiths.
