EPA’s Target Finder calculator

8am, August 06th, 2015

Target Finder is a no-cost online tool that enables architects and building owners to set energy targets and receive a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) energy performance score for projects during the design process. Projects that earn a score of 75 or higher are eligible for Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR certification and can be submitted for the ENERGY STAR Challenge.

ENERGY STAR is a voluntary EPA program that delivers environmental benefits and financial value through superior energy efficiency. By certifying top-performing products, homes, and buildings, ENERGY STAR helps us all make energy-efficient choices. ENERGY STAR is best known as the little blue mark on consumer products. But, since 1992, EPA has also worked with businesses and public-sector organizations to transform the way that commercial buildings and industrial plants use energy.

Today, thousands of facility owners and managers use ENERGY STAR to:

  • Assess how their properties are performing
  • Adopt an energy management strategy
  • Identify ways to save energy, cut costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Earn recognition
  • Communicate their energy-saving efforts to the public

By the end of 2013, with help from ENERGY STAR, American families and businesses saved more than $295 billion on utility bills and prevented more than 2.1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

Also intended for specific municipalitie and states for local legistation compliance is the document State and Local Legislation Leveraging ENERGY STAR. State and local governments across the country are taking bold steps to protect the climate and lower energy costs by adopting policies that leverage EPA’s ENERGY STAR tools to reduce energy use in commercial buildings. This document provides a summary of state and local legislation that references ENERGY STAR tools such as Target Finder to set whole building energy performance targets in new building design and Portfolio Manager to track energy use, energy costs, and carbon emissions in existing buildings.
